Your first visit, step by step
Walking into a dispensary for the first time can feel like a lot. It doesn't have to be. Whether you're cannacurious or a seasoned vet, a visit to Diem comes down to four steps: bring your ID, browse, ask questions, and pick up.
Here's what to expect at Diem Worcester and Diem Lynn, start to finish.
What do I need to bring to a dispensary?
A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. You need to be 21 or older to buy adult-use cannabis in Massachusetts. Out-of-state visitors are welcome.
You don't need a medical card. Both Diem locations are recreational, adult-use stores, so being 21+ with a valid ID is all it takes.
Do dispensaries check ID at the door?
Yes. Massachusetts regulations require dispensary staff to check your ID when you walk in, and again when you pay. It's quick, and it's the same for everyone, no matter how old you look.
If you're shopping with a friend, everyone who comes inside needs to be 21+ with their own ID.
How is a dispensary menu organized?
Menus are usually sorted by product type. Here are the main categories you'll see, in plain English:
- Flower: The dried cannabis bud itself, sold by weight. You grind it and smoke it or use it in a vaporizer.
- Pre-rolls: Flower that's already rolled into a joint. No gear or rolling skills needed.
- Edibles: Cannabis in food form, like gummies and chocolates. Effects come on slowly and last longer (more on that below).
- Vapes: Cartridges filled with cannabis oil that attach to a battery. No smoke or combustion.
- Concentrates: Extracts like wax, rosin, and shatter, which are much stronger than flower. Our concentrates explainer breaks down the different types.

What should I tell the budtender?
Our budtenders are there to help, and no question is too basic. A few things worth telling them:
- That it's your first time, or that it's been a while.
- What you're planning. A quiet night in, a movie, a low-key evening with friends at home.
- How you'd like to consume it. Smoking, vaping, or edibles.
- Your budget. They'll work with whatever you want to spend.
You don't need to know any lingo. Just describe what you're looking for in your own words.
Should I order ahead or shop in store?
Both work. It depends on how you like to shop.
Shopping in store is a good pick for a first visit. You can see what's on the shelves and ask questions as you go.
Ordering ahead is faster once you know what you want. Browse the Diem Worcester menu or the Diem Lynn menu, place your order, and it's usually ready within 10–15 minutes. You'll still show your ID when you arrive. Diem is in-store pickup only; we don't deliver.
How do I pay at a dispensary?
- Payment: debit, cash, or DutchiePay.
- ATMs on site: Diem Worcester has two ATMs and Diem Lynn has one, if you need cash.

How much can I buy?
- Purchase limit: As of April 2026, Massachusetts allows adults 21+ to buy up to two ounces of flower, or the equivalent in other products. Mixing categories? Our budtenders can help you work out what fits.
How will my purchase be packaged?
Massachusetts requires cannabis products to be sold in sealed, labeled, child-resistant packaging. Keep it that way until you're home, and store it somewhere locked and out of reach of kids and pets.
Are edibles different?
Yes. Edibles take longer to kick in than smoking or vaping. Massachusetts edible labels warn that effects may be delayed by two hours or more.
Start low and go slow. Take a small amount, then give it time before you take more. Edibles can also last longer than you expect, so plan to be home for the evening.

Know the rules
Massachusetts has a few rules that first-timers don't always know about:
- Enjoy it at a private residence. Consuming cannabis in public, including parks, sidewalks, and parking lots, is illegal.
- Keep it closed in the car. Cannabis in a vehicle should be sealed and in the trunk or a locked glove compartment, not the passenger area. Never consume in a car, and never drive high.
- It stays in Massachusetts. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal, even to another legal state.
- Don't share with anyone under 21. Adult-use cannabis is for adults 21+ only.
