Visiting Massachusetts? Here's the short version
Yes, you can buy cannabis in Massachusetts if you're visiting from another state. You need to be 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID, and you have to follow the same rules as everyone else.
We see a lot of out-of-state visitors at Diem Worcester and Diem Lynn, mostly from Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, and New Jersey. Here are the questions visitors ask most.
Can you buy weed in Massachusetts with an out-of-state ID?
Yes. According to the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC), visitors must be 21 or older and present a valid government-issued ID to buy from a licensed adult-use store. Residency isn't required.
What matters is that your ID is valid, unexpired, government-issued, and shows your photo and date of birth. An expired license or a photo of your ID on your phone won't work. If you're unsure whether yours will be accepted, call the store before you drive over.
How much cannabis can you buy?
As of April 2026, Massachusetts allows adults 21+ to buy up to two ounces of flower, or the equivalent in other products. Under the updated law, two ounces of flower is equivalent to 10 grams of active THC in concentrate or 1,000 mg of active THC in edibles, per the CCC's bulletin on the new law.

What will I pay in taxes?
Massachusetts cannabis purchases carry three taxes, according to the CCC:
- State cannabis excise tax: 10.75%
- State sales tax: 6.25%
- Local option tax: up to 3%, set by each city or town
That's up to 20% combined on top of the product price, so budget a little extra at checkout.
Where can you use it?
This is where visitors most often get tripped up. Cannabis in Massachusetts is for private use only.
- No public consumption. The CCC says you can't use cannabis in any form, including smoking, vaping, or eating, in public places or on federal land. That includes parks, beaches, sidewalks, and parking lots.
- Private residence only. Consume on private property where you have the owner's permission.
- Hotels usually say no. Most hotels ban smoking and vaping on the property. The CCC recommends asking about a hotel or rental's cannabis policy before you consume. If you're booking a short-term rental, check the listing's rules.
Can you take it home to another legal state?
No. It doesn't matter if you live in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Maine, or Rhode Island, where cannabis is also legal for adults. Cannabis is still illegal under federal law, and the CCC is clear: it's illegal to drive across state lines with cannabis, or to take it out of Massachusetts by plane, train, boat, or any other way.

Driving with cannabis in Massachusetts
- Keep it sealed and out of reach. Store your purchase in a closed container in the trunk or a locked glove compartment, per the CCC.
- Never consume in a car. That includes passengers and parked cars.
- Never drive high. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Massachusetts, the same as with alcohol.

- From Connecticut: I-395 north runs into I-290 in Auburn, a short drive from our exit.
- From Rhode Island: Route 146 runs from Providence straight up to Worcester and I-290.
- From New York and the Pike: the Mass Pike (I-90) connects to I-290 and Route 146 just outside the city.
Diem Lynn: for the North Shore, NH, and Boston stays
Diem Lynn is at 211 Lewis St, on Route 1A near the Swampscott line. Route 1A runs up the North Shore through Swampscott and Salem, and south toward Revere and Logan Airport. That makes Lynn a convenient stop if you're staying in Boston or visiting the coast.
