Worcester's night-out neighborhood
If you're planning a night out in Worcester, odds are it ends up in the Canal District. It's the stretch of old brick buildings running up from Kelley Square along Green Street, Water Street, and Harding Street, and it's where a lot of the city's restaurants, bars, and live music live.
Diem Worcester is right on the edge of it, at 74 Grafton St. If you're 21+, it's an easy stop to pick up something for later at home, with our own parking lot and hours until 11pm Monday through Saturday.
A little history
The neighborhood takes its name from the Blackstone Canal, which opened in 1828 and linked Worcester to Providence by water. It only ran as a commercial route for about 20 years, but the name stuck.
For decades the area was a working neighborhood of mills, shops, and immigrant families, then it went quiet after I-290 cut through. Since the 2000s it has filled back in with independent restaurants, bars, and shops, many of them in the old mill and warehouse buildings.
Kelley Square
Kelley Square is the southern tip of the district, where seven streets meet. For years it was famous for having no traffic lights and a lot of creative driving. It was rebuilt as a modern roundabout in the early 2020s, with new sidewalks and bike lanes, so it's a lot friendlier on foot now.
Polar Park sits just up Madison Street. The WooSox play there from spring through September, and the ballpark and the DCU Center host other events too, so check their calendars before you plan around parking.
How to spend the night
There's no single right way to do it, but here's what the neighborhood does well:
- Dinner: The district has a wide spread of places to eat, from casual spots to sit-down restaurants. Green Street and Water Street are good places to start walking.
- Worcester Public Market: At 160 Green St, it's an indoor market with food stalls from around the world, local makers, and a brewery taproom. It's closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so check hours before you go.
- Live music: Plenty of Canal District bars and venues book bands and DJs, and the Public Market hosts live music nights too. Check venue calendars for what's on.
- A walk: The district is compact. Park once and explore on foot.
Getting there and parking
We're at 74 Grafton St, just off Exit 18 on I-290, a short walk from Union Station and the Canal District.
- Driving: Paid lots and street parking in the Canal District can fill up when there's an event at Polar Park or the DCU Center. Diem Worcester has a dedicated on-site lot for customers.
- Commuter Rail: Union Station is on the MBTA Framingham/Worcester Line, a short walk from Diem and from the district. Check the MBTA schedule for late trains back.
- Rideshare: If you're drinking, leave the car at home. Tell your driver 74 Grafton St, Worcester.
Picking up at Diem
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. You need to be 21 or older. Out-of-state visitors are welcome.
- Order ahead. Browse the Diem Worcester menu, place your order, and it's usually ready in 10–15 minutes.
- Mind the clock. We're open until 11pm Monday through Saturday and 10pm on Sunday.
- Payment: debit, cash, or DutchiePay. There are two ATMs on site.

Know the rules
Massachusetts has a few rules worth knowing before a night out:
- No public consumption. That includes the streets, sidewalks, parking lots, bars, restaurants, and anywhere near a venue. Enjoy at a private residence.
- Don't mix it with alcohol. If you've been drinking, save your pickup for another night.
- Keep it sealed in the car. Cannabis in a vehicle should be in its original sealed packaging or in the trunk. Never consume in a car, and never drive high.
- It stays in Massachusetts. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal, even to another legal state.
