Lynn is a full day out
Lynn doesn't always get its due on the North Shore. In one day you can walk a 2,200-acre forest, see a few dozen downtown murals, and finish with a sunset walk along the ocean. In fall it's a foliage walk. In summer the same route turns into a beach day.
If you're 21+, Diem Lynn is on the way out. Make the day about Lynn, then stop in to pick something up for later at home.
Morning: Lynn Woods Reservation
Lynn Woods is a 2,200-acre city park, founded in 1881 and often called the second-largest municipal park in the country. There are more than 30 miles of trails for hiking, running, biking, and horseback riding. It's open sunrise to sunset, every day.
Two landmarks worth the walk:
- Stone Tower. A stone fire-lookout tower on Burrill Hill, built by the WPA in 1936. From the top you can see the Lynn waterfront and Boston.
- Dungeon Rock. A cave a spiritualist started digging in 1852, following what he believed were messages about buried pirate treasure. None was ever found. You can walk down into it when the iron door is open.
Both keep limited hours: the Lynn Woods site lists May 1 through October 31, 8am to 2pm, Sunday through Thursday. Check visitlynnwoods.org before you go, since hours can change.
Parking: there are two main lots, at 106 Pennybrook Road and at the end of Great Woods Road.
Midday: downtown murals
Head into downtown Lynn for lunch and a walk. Since 2016, the nonprofit Beyond Walls has added about 80 large-scale murals downtown, and the city now counts roughly 100 in all. The Beyond Walls site has a mural map if you want to plan a route.
Downtown is under a mile from Diem, so it works as a stop at any point in the day.
Afternoon: the Lynn Shore
Lynn Shore Drive follows the water along Nahant Bay, with views of Egg Rock and the Boston skyline in the distance. The Lynn Shore Reservation and Nahant Beach Reservation are both run by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). A two-mile promenade connects them, and it's open for walking, running, and biking all year.
- Red Rock Park. A small waterfront park on a rocky point between Kings Beach and Lynn Beach, with tide pools and open ocean views. On-street parking along Lynn Shore Drive is metered.
- Nahant Beach. Down at the rotary and across the causeway, with Long Beach on the ocean side. In season, the DCR lots charge a daily parking fee.
In fall it's a quiet walk with the wind off the water. Come summer, pack a towel and make a full beach day of it.
Last stop: Diem Lynn
We're at 211 Lewis St, on Route 1A across from the 7-Eleven, near the Swampscott line. The shore is close, so it's an easy last stop on your way home.
- From Red Rock Park: less than half a mile.
- From the Nahant rotary: about a mile.
- From downtown: under a mile.
- From Lynn Woods: about three miles from either the Pennybrook Road or Great Woods Road lot.

Before you shop
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. You need to be 21 or older. Out-of-state visitors are welcome.
- Order ahead. Browse the Diem Lynn menu before you leave the shore, and your order is usually ready in 10–15 minutes.
- Payment: debit, cash, or DutchiePay. There's an ATM on site.

Know the rules
Massachusetts has a few rules worth knowing before you head out:
- No public consumption. That includes Lynn Woods, the trails, Red Rock Park, the beaches, and parking lots. Enjoy at a private residence.
- Save it for home. Cannabis is for the end of the day, once the hiking and driving are done.
- Keep it sealed in the car. Cannabis in a vehicle should be in its original sealed packaging or in the trunk. Never consume in a car, and never drive high.
- It stays in Massachusetts. Taking cannabis across state lines is illegal, even to another legal state.
